I would bet on a bad expansion valve blocking the freon from flowing but you should be able to see this with a gauge set as it will make higher than normal head pressure.

Can you see ice if you look through the outlet to the evaporator (I think) while it is running and starts blowing tepid air. Also the compressor should be cycling of and on as the car get cooler.

I have never had any problems with the Autolite 4100 if it is rebuilt and adjusted properly.

Check the ignition switch if you haven't replaced or for that matter if you have. A loose wire or a bad internal connection. I would try running a jumper from the battery to the coil and see what happens. Don't run it too long this way as that will give full voltage to the coil but that could also b...

It very easily could be the rheostat spring opening and closing with heat, on most switches the rheostat spring is taken out of the circuit at max setting. I presume lifters can be bought individually but I'm not sure. I would be more concerned with what if anything went down into the engine. Not sure what to tell you about how to check on that problem.

When you say the spring was broken on one lifter what exactly do you mean? There is a retaining clip and a piston like device above any spring. I don't think you can get the lifters out without removing the manifold realistically. I don't think the lifters are your problem unless one has collapsed which would make it noisy, and not bend the pushrod. Also I would get new pushrods if it were me. To my knowledge the Ford FE's, at least the 390's, are not interference engines therefore a stuck lifter or jumped cam timing will not bend a pushrod. What will bend the pushrods is a stuck valve/s which if the car had been sitting is very likely.
